Beach stones in wood (detail)

Posted on by Norine

Detail of a wood mosaic
Materials: “waves” are poplar wood painted in blue glazes; “beach stones” are natural woods of cedar, poplar, spalted maple

This is a detail of a larger mosaic, based on one of my favorite themes. It grew naturally from my Meditations series of paintings and silverpoint drawings. This work will be part of an online exhibit called “Off the Floor” through Crafthaus. I’ll post the full image here next month when that show is up and running.

As you’ve seen on my blog and website, I love working in 3 mediums, but I will say that working in multi-media does have its pros and cons. The most difficult is the energy and time involved in marketing. The most rewarding is exploring a particular theme over multi-media: via a paintbrush, a silverpoint stylus, or in the case of my wood mosaics, a band saw – and being sensitive to each medium.

Email me if you have any questions about my work. Thanks for visiting!

Silverpoint Drawing
5×7″ prepared paper

These fortune cookies are drawn with a rod of silver on gray-blue prepared paper. This drawing medium, known as silverpoint, pre-dates the graphite pencil and was used extensively during the Renaissance era. Over time the metallic silver lines will “tarnish” to a sepia tone.

Please email me for purchase info.

Oil Painting
6×9″ beveled panel

I started doing paintings of glass spheres and beach stones in the mid-’90s and haven’t stopped. I still find these elements completely absorbing and elusive, paying close attention to which objects to use and how to arrange them. One painting leads to the next and to the next in a continuous stream, as I spontaneously try to capture the essence, in a brushstroke or color, of these things that I love.

This painting is SOLD. Please email with requests!

Oil Painting
10×8″ bevel-edged panel

“Moonlit” is the latest in my ever-growing Meditations series of paintings and silverpoint drawings of natural elements with glass spheres. See the others here and on my website.

Please email me for purchase of this painting. The wide “floating” frame I created is an integral part of the painting. Photos of the framed painting will be provided upon request.

Oil Painting
9.5×12.5″ panel

This is a slightly larger work in my Meditations series. I’m not sure what type of elegant seedpods these are, but they worked well as tiny canoes being adrift in this strange landscape. I really like the cool dry quality of the colors.

I typically “float” these paintings on a frame that I design and build as an integral part of the work; photos upon request. Please email me if you are interested in purchasing this painting with custom frame.
