“Banded Stones and Spheres”

Posted on by Norine

Silverpoint Drawing
6.5×8.5″ blue-gray prepared paper

After all these years it may seem hard to believe, but each time I begin a silverpoint drawing or a painting, it’s as if for the first time. I’m not fixed as to how to proceed with lines or colors though some lines and brushstrokes just feel natural. The spontaneous marks quickly carry the feelings and info that are riding on them and a flow happens.

Silverpoint is a drawing made with a silver stylus on a prepared surface. Some of the earliest silverpoints date back to the 12th century. It was used extensively during the Renaissance era throughout Europe by artists Durer, Holbein, Raphael, DaVinci, Van der Weyden to name only a few.

Silverpoint Drawing
5×7″ prepared paper

This drawing is rendered with a silver stylus on buff prepared paper, with highlights in white pastel and white ink. A silverpoint drawing tarnishes over time to its characteristic metallic sepia tone. In my blog archives and on my website you’ll see many colors that I’ve experimented with on paper and panels: lavender, ochre, pale blue-green, pale green, blue-gray, etc.

Oil Painting
8×10″ canvas mounted on panel

This couple had the right idea, tucking into the shade along the banks of the Delaware River. This was the scene one fine afternoon in the Park at Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania.

Acrylic Painting
6×8″ beveled panel

Here’s another Bucks County landscape that caught my eye. The late afternoon sun created long, dark shadows across the fields and thankfully I was camera-ready. I need much more time to capture her beauty than Nature will allow so the photo is for reference only; composition and light – not to be slavishly copied. I try to paint my first impression.

Please contact Chapman Gallery in Doylestown, PA for purchase of this painting with “plein air” frame.

Beach stones in wood (detail)

Posted on by Norine

Detail of a wood mosaic
Materials: “waves” are poplar wood painted in blue glazes; “beach stones” are natural woods of cedar, poplar, spalted maple

This is a detail of a larger mosaic, based on one of my favorite themes. It grew naturally from my Meditations series of paintings and silverpoint drawings. This work will be part of an online exhibit called “Off the Floor” through Crafthaus. I’ll post the full image here next month when that show is up and running.

As you’ve seen on my blog and website, I love working in 3 mediums, but I will say that working in multi-media does have its pros and cons. The most difficult is the energy and time involved in marketing. The most rewarding is exploring a particular theme over multi-media: via a paintbrush, a silverpoint stylus, or in the case of my wood mosaics, a band saw – and being sensitive to each medium.

Email me if you have any questions about my work. Thanks for visiting!

Silverpoint Drawing
5×7″ prepared paper

These fortune cookies are drawn with a rod of silver on gray-blue prepared paper. This drawing medium, known as silverpoint, pre-dates the graphite pencil and was used extensively during the Renaissance era. Over time the metallic silver lines will “tarnish” to a sepia tone.
