Oil Painting
6×9″ beveled panel
I started doing paintings of glass spheres and beach stones in the mid-’90s and haven’t stopped. I still find these elements completely absorbing and elusive, paying close attention to which objects to use and how to arrange them. One painting leads to the next and to the next in a continuous stream, as I spontaneously try to capture the essence, in a brushstroke or color, of these things that I love.
If interested, please email me. I typically design and build a “floating” frame for the paintings in this series. See more of the work from my Meditations series in The Art Fly archives and on my website.

It was a mob scene at The Trenton City Museum (Trenton, NJ) last night. Ellarslie Mansion is the name of the museum building where the annual juried Ellarslie Open is held. It’s a beautiful setting amidst the grounds of Cadwalader Park. I was happy to be included in this exhibition, and the accompanying one at Artworks.
These are the two paintings on exhibit:

“Balance” at Artworks until June 1

“Curious” at Ellarslie until June 20
I hope you have a chance to check out these shows! Click on links for more info.

Back from a week in beautiful Montana! Imagine the great Rockies as far as the eye could see, horses roaming acres of fields, eagles soaring, clear winding rivers, wind farms, prairie dogs, sapphire mines, First Peoples Buffalo Jump….which is where the photo was taken.
The literature from the First Peoples Buffalo Jump (Ulm Pishkun) State Park describes: For more than 1,000 years, prehistoric men and women of the Great Plains hunted bison by driving them over cliffs. Ulm Pishkun, is possibly the largest buffalo jump in the world, was used as a jump site between 900 and 1500 A.D. Below the cliffs that stretch more than a mile, the soil reveals compacted bison bones nearly 13 feet deep.
Consider this: “The buffalo was part of us, his flesh and blood being absorbed by us until it became our own flesh and blood. Our clothing, our tipis, everything we needed for life came from the buffalo’s body. It was hard to say where the animal ended and the man began.”

X-ray Photograph
Aren’t these inside views thrilling? I think the shell silverpoint, posted May 3, is similar to the left one. More to come…

X-ray Photograph
As promised in my last post, here is one of many x-ray photos that I had someone take of a box of seashells almost 20 years ago. These are some of the most elegant images I’ve ever seen. Secret spaces revealed. To see this shell as the subject of a silverpoint drawing, please go to archives on the upper right column to see the Oct. 21, 2008 blog post “Round and Around.”

This is a scene from Bucks Gallery of Fine Art in Newtown, PA for the opening of “It’s All About Art” - a juried show featuring sculpture, photography, works on paper, and paintings. It was great to see so many people come out on a frigid night to celebrate the Arts!

Art Opening at New Hope Arts Center
Saturday was the opening of Bucks Life magazine’s first annual juried show “It’s All About Art” held at New Hope Arts Center. It was great to be part of this group of woodworkers, sculptors, painters and photographers! I have ten paintings scattered throughout the gallery. This show is split into two galleries, at two locations, with two openings that are a week apart…
There will be another opening of “It’s All About Art” on Saturday, January 24 - at Bucks Gallery of Fine Art in Newtown, PA. The shows, at both locations, run until February 24, so take some time off. Treat yourself to two interesting galleries in two great towns!

Lots of the beach stones I collect are sitting on a wall outside my studio. After a recent ice and snowstorm I stepped outside and slid across the walk to take some photos of them enrobed in ice, like these!

I’m back from a week on beautiful Block Island, where every sunset was the highlight of the day! I took this photo of a couple who had the best seats on the island.
If I had a list of favorite sounds, waves washing over beach stones would be at the top.
Speaking of beach stones, the car was loaded with new treasures for the trip back to Pennsylvania. My paintings and silverpoints of these are in the works and will be coming here soon!
